Last week at a media conference, Saturday night at a 30th birthday dinner and lots of places, I hear people talking about the Social Network Fad.
Yes, Facebook may not triumph.
Yes, Social networks as we know them today will not be the same next year.
NO, social interaction is not new. In fact it’s as old as the hills (or the caves). It’s why we lived in clans, villages, communities, families, friends, clubs, team sports.
It’s pretty damn basic human behaviour.
It’s normal. Even Maslow put it on his pyramid. Social belonging.
So what is new?
Social networks is really a technology that allows us to do more with social groups. It let’s us communicate and interact with our social group in an easier and often richer way. I could always have played a game of scrabble with my dad and ten of my friends online, but I never did. Why did I do it with Facebook? Because my friends were already there and it was seamlessly simple. No new account, no new installation, just New Game - GO!
So next time you’re thinking “Nah, I don’t get it. It’s a load of rubbish.” Put your thoughts in context with two things.
1. Being social is core to being human.
2. Technology always moves forward.
